The largest lake in Kazakhstan – Balkhash
Lake Balkhash is located in four regions of Kazakhstan: Almaty, Zhambyl, Karaganda, and Zhetysu. The phenomenon of Balkhash lies in the different salinity of its western and eastern parts, connected by a narrow strait. The western basin is fresh, while the eastern is brackish.
The climate within the lake area is arid, so summers here are always hot and there is practically no precipitation, which provides great opportunities for spending a quality vacation.

To get to Balkhash you need to buy a railway ticket to Lepsy station. Further, if you have booked accommodation in any recreation centre, you will be transferred according to the conditions of the recreation area. If not, you will need to arrange a taxi on the spot to take you to the coast. It is also possible to rest ‘savages’, if you are travelling by car, in this case the choice of place will be up to you.
The road passes on the motorway Almaty - Ust-Kamenogorsk to Taldykorgan, and then leaves on Lepsy village. Distance from Almaty to Lepsy village is 425 kilometres, from Taldykorgan to Lepsy village is 158 kilometres. The travelling time from Almaty is from 4 to 6 hours, from Taldykorgan 3-4 hours, depending on the speed. The route impresses with a variety of landscapes - from mountainous terrain and steppe expanses to sand dunes.
It is best to stock up on food, water, petrol in the nearest settlements. As a rule, meals are not included in the price of accommodation and are offered at an additional cost.
