The museum was opened on September 20, 1985 to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Shokan Ualikhanov – a great Kazakh scientist, orientalist, historian, ethnographer, geographer, enlightener and democrat.
The museum was designed by architects Rustem Seydalin, Bek Ibraev and Serik Rustambekov. The building of the museum, with an area of 629.4 square meters, reflects the traditions of Kazakh memorial buildings – mazars. From the outside, all corners of the building have different size and height, symbolizing the “four corners of the universe”.
The interior design of the museum resembles a yurt. Instead of the traditional shanyrak, in the center of the ceiling there are “knots of happiness” – a symbol of favorable life in the East. The ceiling in the museum seems to “float” in the air and has different heights. According to the museum staff, it is made according to the ancient technique of decorating buildings and allows illuminating the building at any position of the sun.
The museum consists of an exposition hall, a lecture hall and a storage room. Here are collected expositions from museums and archives of Moscow, Almaty, St. Petersburg. At the entrance to the museum hangs a hand-woven tapestry reproducing the route of the famous travels of the scientist.
There are also collected manuscripts of Ualikhanov, maps made by him and memoirs of his contemporaries. In total there are 934 exhibits in the museum, including the works and personal belongings of the museum founder Igibai Bazarbayev.
